The seaweed (Sargassum) was named by the Portuguese sailors who found it in the Sargasso Sea.

There are two species (S. natans and S. fluitans) commonly found in the Caribbean. It is only found in the Atlantic Ocean and provides refuge for migratory species.

They generally inhabit shallow water and coral reefs, and is widely known for its planktonic (free-floating) species.

This free-floating seaweed will not attach to the ocean floor and its movements depend solely on ocean currents.

It is an essential habitat for some species of fish and invertebrates and provides shelter and food to sea turtles, tuna and black jack fish.

Sargassum can also be extremely important to particular endangered and migratory species like sea turtles and whales.

Additionally, Sargassum plays a role in beach nourishment and shoreline stability, however, in excessive amounts it may result in beach erosion and an unpleasant odor.

During decomposition on the seashore there will be a smell, and it will also attract insects.

The influx of seaweed is believed to be related to increased accumulation in the Atlantic Ocean where the seaweed consolidates into large mats and is transported by ocean currents to the Caribbean.

Sargassum species are also cultivated and cleaned for use as an herbal remedy. Many Chinese herbalists prescribe powdered Sargassum — in doses of 0.5 gram dissolved in warm water and drunk as a tea.
